Calocephalus brownii is a medium-sized evergreen perennial shrub, native to Australia; the thin stems, very branched, are greyish-green, almost silvery, as well as the linear leaves, which make the shrub decorative throughout the year.
It is planted in the autumn, remembering that the plant can reach 120-150 cm in height and about 60 cm in diameter. In spring it produces small spherical inflorescences, made up of very particular greenish-yellow flowers at the apex of the stems; in summer the flowers are replaced by fruits, small whitish-gray berries.
Calcecephalus are very suitable in perennial beds, and also among aromatics; in fact these shrubs do not have very long life, but are very decorative; sometimes they are grown as annual plants, in low borders, or in annual pots, and are uprooted at the arrival of winter.
The Calocephalus brownii are to be planted in a sunny, or even semi-shaded place; they can generally withstand temperatures close to -5 ° C even if they prefer milder temperatures, around 10-15 ° C.
It is advisable to place this variety of plants in a place sheltered from the wind and, during the winter season, to cover the surrounding soil with dry leaves or mulch material in order to protect the roots from rigid temperatures.
The plants of this variety are well suited for pot cultivation, given the small size they reach; in this way it is possible to repair them better during the coldest period.
The plants of Calocephalus brownii are quite rustic and resistant and as far as watering is concerned, they have no particular needs, often being satisfied with only the rains.
Obviously, from March to October, it is advisable to water in case of prolonged periods of drought, however waiting for the soil to be perfectly dry between one watering and the other to avoid stagnation of water that can compromise the health of the plant or cause some root rot. During the vegetative period, provide fertilizer for flowering plants, every 20-25 days, dissolved in the irrigating water.
Grown up and sold in a 10, 12, 13 cm pot
