Description:

Lilium are plants belonging to the Liliaceae family originating from Europe, Asia and North America. Their bulbs are made up of numerous flattened, slightly sharp and tightened scales to form a central disk with perennial roots in the lower part and an erect and rigid flower stem in the upper part. The stem is covered with opposite lanceolate green leaves arranged in a random order. The fragrant flowers of an intense white color have an umbrella-shaped corolla made up of six petals and six stamens ending with red-brown pollen sacs. Lilies bloom in midsummer and in suitable environmental conditions they can produce flowers all year round.

Care:

Lilium bulbs, like all bulbous plants, should be planted in autumn or in early spring in a well-worked, soft, rich of organic substances and well-drained soil, to prevent water stagnation from causing the bulbs to rot. It is necessary to implant them with the tip pointing upwards in holes about 20 cm deep and about 10-15 cm apart from each other. Lilies love sunny places, preferably sheltered from the winds. In regions with an excessively hot summer climate they can also be placed in partially shaded areas to avoid serious burns to the leaves and to prolong flowering as much as possible.

In addition, they are plants that love moist soils: they should be watered regularly, but without excesses in the vegetative phase and in the flowering period. Before planting the bulbs in the ground or in pots, fertilize the soil with mature manure or with specific products for bulbous plants, including slow release granular ones. A fertilizer rich in potassium is also useful once a week.
