The mimosa, or rather Acacia dealbata, originates in the area of south-east Australia and Tasmania (in these areas it can reach a height of 20-25 meters).

Mimosa can grow from north to south Italy, on the coasts of the great northern lakes they can also be grown in the open ground.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HOUSING:

• Choose the place carefully: a sunny position, preferably south, sheltered from the wind by a hedge or a wall. Prepare the planting hole by digging a hole 50/60 cm deep and wide and remove the stones and weeds.

• Mix about a third of planting soil enriched with 2/3 shovelfuls of composted manure to the removed earth; in calcareous soil, make a larger hole (about 1m) and add moorland and peat to make the soil acidic. Spread a handful or two of cornunghia at the bottom of the hole, and a draining layer in clayey soil, based on expanded clay balls, polecat or clay pot shards (do not put gravel at the risk of alkalizing the soil).

• Immerse the mimosa plant in a bucket of water to rehydrate the clod, gently flare the shrub, untie the intertwined roots and arrange the clod without burying the graft (for the acacia dealbata). Provide a stake at the time of planting because mimosa plants have a superficial rooting.

• For growing in pots, mix 1/3 of planting soil, 1/3 of garden soil and 1/3 of peat and drainage (expanded clay balls, polecat, etc.). Choose a pot that is at least 50cm tall and wide to ensure rapid growth and abundant flowering.

CARE:

Mimosa plants are naturally drought tolerant and cannot tolerate excess water. However, the young seedlings should be watered during the first two summers, by the time the shrubs take root properly. Avoid digging at the foot of the adult mimosa, because it would risk damaging the superficial roots and generating the growth of suckers. Keep the soil clean at the foot of the mimosa with good mulch, and add composted manure in late winter.

It can be pruned after flowering in March. Cut the withered branches by half or 2/3 to keep the shrub compact. The mimosa of the 4 seasons can also be pruned in spring: shorten the branches by half or a third. Before winter, provide a protection at the foot of the mimosa such as a 30 to 50 cm layer of straw or dead leaves on 80/60 cm wide, thus preserving the superficial roots and the grafting point, maintained with a chicken net for example.

Mimosa seedlings grown in pots should be watered more regularly in the development period, and more lightly in winter. The clod must never dry out completely. Regularly add fertilizer for flowering shrubs (or fertilizer for roses). Also provide for a repotting every two three years in the mixture already mentioned. Store the potted plants as soon as the first cold weather arrives, in a very bright and frost-free room (between 5/8 °), such as a veranda, a bright garage. They are not indoor plants, so don't put them in the apartment, where they won't stand the heat and dry atmosphere.

OTHER INFORMATION:

It was imported into Europe around 1900. It is known above all as an ornamental plant, thanks to its beautiful yellow flowers with a delicate fragrance. Symbol of the woman, a twig of this plant is offered to them on March 8th. Mimosa is an outdoor plant.

The mimosa develops in an erect way, in Europe it can reach a height of 10 meters.
