The bellflower is a resistant plant, highly ground cover and characterized by the presence of bell-shaped flowers that are distributed evenly over the entire surface of the plant. particularly suitable to be placed on external sills in cases where the position is not too sunny, better less sun than too much sun.

Its feature of being straightening allows it to be used in the best possible way even on window sills in the presence of shutters, thus making the decorated windows sagging and always colored.

It is considered a graceful herbaceous plant, with a hanging or climbing posture depending on the use. It is characterized by rounded leaves with a toothed margin, of a beautiful bright green, and creeping stems with a woody structure, even 50 cm long. The blue or lilac flowers are starry bells that bloom in succession. It blooms from May until September. Plants obtained from seeds flower after about 2 years.

They all come from the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, especially Europe and Turkey.

These are evergreen plants, generally rustic whose cultivation is indicated both indoors and outdoors.

Advice for the cultivation of bellflower

Growing bluebells is not difficult. You can decide for the pot or for the garden.

Type of terrain

The bluebell has no particular needs regarding the soil, the important thing is that it is adequately drained and rich in nutrients to ensure beautiful blooms. The substrate must be cool and moist. The only soils to avoid are those that are too acidic and peaty. If you opt for the cultivation in a pot, the ideal soil is the one formed, in equal parts, by garden soil and soil for flowering plants, preparing a layer of very small gravel on the bottom of the case ensures a good draining effect. The same gravel can be added to the soil if it is too compact.

It is a plant that loves light but not direct so it is better to opt for semi-shaded places and for temperatures of about 15 degrees which during the coldest months should not be below 7 degrees and during the warm months it should not exceed 22. degrees, normally near windows outside the plant is able to winter well having one side protected by the house which makes the cold of winter less impactful.

Watering

Watering must be constant, making sure that the soil remains constantly humid (not wet) and without water stagnations in the saucer which are not tolerated. During the winter, water with more moderation, always keeping the soil slightly humid

By spraying the leaves the correct humidity is maintained around the plant. Another effective method is to fill the saucer with pebbles and water (without immersing the bottom of the vase!)

Fertilizations

During spring and summer about every 20 days it can be fertilized with complete fertilizer in liquid form to add to the irrigation water.

The bellflower does not need frequent repotting. When it is done, always in spring, it is good to replace part of the soil that must be fertile and drained. a good way to make the soil rich is to use mature or pelleted manure to distribute on the ground. With the rains the same will be dissolved and made to penetrate into the deeper layers of the soil.

Flowering

During the summer, the bluebell blooms with wonderful flowers. Lilac, blue, white, mauve… which tend to go downhill, any variety will bring color and style to your terrace or garden and home. It is important to remove the flowers as they begin to wilt to ensure constant flowering throughout the summer.

Pruning

At the end of winter-early spring the bluebells must be pruned until leaving the plant at a height of about 7 cm. With the cut branches, cuttings can be made for the reproduction of the plant.
