Anigozanthos, also known as “Kangaroo Paw,” is an evergreen perennial native to Western Australia, prized for its velvety tubular flowers that resemble a kangaroo paw.
Anigozanthos forms a dense clump of narrow, elongated, ribbon-like leaves that grow from underground rhizomes.
The flower stems are erect and bear branched inflorescences rich in buds, creating a very vertical and architectural effect.
The flowers, covered with a light velvety down, are tubular and arranged in a fan shape, with an appearance that recalls an animal paw, hence the common name Kangaroo Paw.
The shades range from red, orange and yellow to pink, green and purple, often with very decorative two-tone combinations.
It is ideal both as a potted plant for terraces and balconies and as an ornamental in sunny flowerbeds, as well as being widely used as a cut flower due to its long life in a vase.
It prefers positions in full sun, where it produces more flower stems and more intense colours.
It requires well-drained, slightly acidic, and mostly sandy soil; it definitely fears waterlogging.
Watering should be moderate: the substrate should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings, because excess water can cause root rot.
In mild climates it is a long-lived plant, while in areas with cold winters it is advisable to grow it in a pot and protect it from frost.
Its good drought resistance makes it suitable for low-maintenance gardens and Mediterranean contexts.
A light fertilization with a balanced fertilizer in spring promotes more abundant flowering.
