PLAYING WITH THE HYACINTH

PLAYING WITH THE HYACINTH

We are approaching October and with the arrival of this month it is time to think about enriching our terrace: why not think about planting hyacinths?

Depending on its color, the meaning of this flower changes, but in general it is a symbol of fun and play.

Hyacinths are very popular in the garden and on the terrace thanks to their beautiful colors and sweet scent.

It is a very resistant plant and can be planted both in the garden and in pots: it is really easy to do it and also finding the bulbs has never been easier with the wide choice that GardenStuff offers you on its online shop.

The bulbs should be planted between October and November: the autumn season is perfect to start cultivating these wonderful plants.

The cultivation of hyacinth and its maintenance is very simple, but it changes depending on whether you decide to grow the plant in the garden or in a pot, inside an apartment.

If you grow hyacinth in pots, you need to be careful that the ambient temperature does not drop below 13° and that the pot receives sunlight, but not directly.

For the cultivation in pots we use soil composed half of clay-siliceous earth, a fifth of sand and the rest of mature compost of manure.

A 7 cm layer of expanded clay should be placed on the bottom of the pot, for good drainage and a mixture (in equal parts) of loose earth, soil for garden plants and sand. As long as the bulb has not opened to seedling it is recommended to keep the pot in the dark.

Usually 3 or 4 bulbs are combined, very narrow, in a single vase. They cover themselves with light soil, leaving all the tips uncovered. We lightly irrigate and place everything in a cool and dark room. When we see the leaves and the flower stem appear, we move everything to a bright room. Finally, in full bloom, let's keep it in the places where we usually stay.

The flowering of hyacinths grown indoors is characterized by a greater precocity than garden crops.

The hyacinth, as for most bulbous plants, does not like too much water and is affected by any type of water stagnation. Do not irrigate too much, increase the amount of water only in summer while paying attention to water stagnation.

Hyacinth flowers do not need constant and regular pruning. Remember that it is important to cut the flowers once they have faded or once flowering has finished so that the plant will save its energy for the growing periods.
